About Bukit Lawang
Bukit Lawang is located 80 km away from Medan, in the province of North Sumatra. The village is famous for the orangutan’s rehabilitation center, as well as the entrance of Gunung Leuser National Park to see the animals in their natural habitat. The tropical rainforest is a World Heritage Property by UNESCO due to its biodiversity.
In the forest reserve orangutans, different species of gibbons, macaques, wild elephants and tigers and many insects, butterflies, frogs and its very characteristic flora and fauna can be found.
Native to Indonesia and Malaysia, orangutans are currently found only in rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, though fossils have been found in Java, the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Vietnam and Mainland China. There are only two surviving species, both are endangered: the Bornean Orangutan (Pongopygmaeus) and the critically endangered Sumatran Orangutan (Pongoabelii). The name “orangutan” comes from the Malay-words “orang” (man) and “(h)utan” (forest); hence, “man of the forest”.
